Egypt’s Tourism Minister Highlights Year-Round Appeal of the Country as a Travel Destination
Sharif Fathi, Egypt’s Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, served as the guest speaker at a seminar organized by the American Chamber of Commerce in Egypt. The event was attended by Dalia Wahba, Vice President of the Chamber, and Dina Nawar, Chief Operating Officer and Communications Director.
Also present from the Ministry were Dr. Ahmed Ghoneim, CEO of the Grand Egyptian Museum, Dr. Ahmed Youssef, CEO of the Egyptian General Authority for Tourism Promotion, Rana Gohar, Minister’s Advisor for Communication and External Relations, and Dr. Ahmed Nabil, Assistant Minister for Aviation and Follow-up.

In his opening remarks, Fathi expressed his pleasure in participating in this important meeting that provided an opportunity to discuss recent developments in Egypt’s tourism and antiquities sector as well as indicators of incoming tourist traffic.
During the seminar, he presented a comprehensive overview of the ministry’s current strategy and vision for sector development. He emphasized that the ministry operates with a clear methodology aimed at establishing Egypt as “the most diverse tourist destination in the world,” leveraging its unique cultural, archaeological, and natural assets.
Fathi noted that Egypt’s competitive advantage extends beyond the diversity and abundance of tourist products to include ease of connectivity between them, allowing tourists to enjoy a comprehensive experience through visits to multiple destinations.
The ministry’s strategy aims for sustainable economic and tourism development while preserving cultural heritage, positively impacting both society and the national economy. Key areas include enhancing tourism investment competitiveness, diversifying tourism products, developing human resources, improving visitor experiences, supporting sustainability initiatives, promoting digital transformation, and implementing effective tourism marketing policies.
He highlighted several key messages that underpin promotional efforts for Egypt as a tourist destination: it operates year-round and caters to diverse tourist preferences while prioritizing visitor safety and authenticity in experiences far removed from current conflict zones.
Fathi also discussed the ministry’s sustainability efforts, mentioning initiatives aimed at fostering environmentally sustainable practices within various tourism facilities while enhancing human resource capabilities through training programs.
The minister outlined ongoing efforts to enrich the tourist experience in Egypt by focusing on authenticity and involving local communities to provide visitors with richer experiences.
He observed a notable shift in global tourist trends, with many travelers now preferring to combine various types of tourism during their trips. Some tourists are inclined to merge visits to iconic sites like the Pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum with beach destinations or desert locations like Siwa Oasis.
Additionally, he noted that other tourist markets are beginning to explore new destinations within Egypt alongside traditional ones such as Luxor and Aswan combined with Red Sea cities. Certain nationalities are particularly interested in visiting Siwa for desert tourism alongside North Coast attractions.
The minister emphasized the importance of having a comprehensive agenda for events throughout the year in Egypt to attract diverse groups of tourists interested in various activities.
He also reviewed efforts to develop yacht tourism in Egypt along with projects aimed at digitizing archaeological sites and museums using cutting-edge technology to enhance visitor experiences.
In discussing artificial intelligence’s role in tourism development, he stated it is a crucial tool for promoting new tourism products and reaching broader customer segments when employed innovatively to create new experiences beyond traditional models.
Furthermore, he addressed initiatives aimed at increasing hotel capacity in Egypt including organizing short-term rental properties. The Egyptian government is currently working on launching a unified investment platform with several ministries to simplify procedures and expedite approvals necessary to attract more tourism investments.
The seminar saw active participation from attendees through various inquiries regarding developments within Egypt’s tourism sector.
