Written byFerdous Saeed

The Portugal national team kicks off its campaign in the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a match against the Democratic Republic of Congo, part of Group 11. The team is eager to start strong and send an early message to its competitors.

The tournament commenced on June 11 with a match between South Africa and Mexico, and it will conclude on July 19.

Portugal finds itself in Group 11 alongside the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uzbekistan, and Colombia, a challenging group where the “Brazil of Europe” aims to begin the tournament on a high note.

Portugal will face the Democratic Republic of Congo tomorrow evening at the NRG Stadium as part of the first round of Group 11 matches.

The Portuguese team hopes to demonstrate its seriousness in competing for the global title. Although it has never won the World Cup, it enters this edition as one of the top contenders, bolstered by a squad filled with stars and experience.

The best achievement for Portugal in World Cup history was finishing third in 1966, while it placed fourth in 2006. The team exited the last edition in Qatar during the quarter-finals.

Despite having talented generations in recent years, Portugal has yet to achieve a global accomplishment that matches its potential, although it won the Euro 2016 title under a golden generation.

The World Cup remains Cristiano Ronaldo’s ultimate goal as he seeks to lead his country to a historic achievement before retiring from international football.

The “Brazil of Europe” enters the match with high spirits following a series of friendly victories against the United States, Chile, and Nigeria.
