Thibaut Courtois, the goalkeeper for the Belgian national team, acknowledged the challenges faced during their opening match against Egypt in the World Cup, stating that the draw was a fair result for both sides.

Egypt managed to secure a valuable point by holding Belgium to a 1-1 draw during their group stage opener at the 2026 World Cup.

In post-match comments, Courtois noted, “We did not perform at the required level against Egypt. In the first half, we were not ourselves, but our performance improved in the second half. Egypt created some chances against us, and overall, it was a good match.”.

He added, “I believe we were not decisive enough in front of goal. We needed to take advantage of our opportunities and play with more speed and precision. There were some spaces behind their defenders that we failed to exploit.”.

The Real Madrid goalkeeper continued, “In the second half, we corrected our mistakes; there were more spaces available and we increased our threat to their goal.”.

Courtois also mentioned that they could have scored in the last five minutes of the match but emphasized that sometimes it is essential to know how to avoid defeat. “Therefore, a draw is a fair result,” he concluded.

He wrapped up his remarks by stating, “All matches in the World Cup are complex and extremely challenging. The game between Spain and Cape Verde is evidence of that.”.
