She stated that protecting these creatures is essential for conserving natural resources and achieving sustainable development.

This statement was made in conjunction with World Sea Turtle Day, celebrated annually on June 16, aimed at raising awareness about the importance of sea turtles and the global challenges they face.

Dr. Awad described sea turtles as ‘engineers of marine ecosystems’ due to their vital role in maintaining seagrass beds and coral reefs, which serve as natural habitats for numerous marine species. These ecosystems are crucial for supporting fish populations and maintaining ecological balance in oceans and seas.

Dr. Awad noted that sea turtles face numerous threats, including plastic pollution, accidental capture in fishing gear, loss of nesting sites, and the increasing impacts of climate change. Most species are classified as endangered or at risk of extinction according to assessments by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

The Egyptian government is committed to protecting sea turtles through a comprehensive system aimed at preserving biodiversity, particularly within marine protected areas in the Red Sea, which are vital feeding and nesting habitats for many sea turtle species.

Dr. Awad affirmed that Egyptian environmental legislation prohibits the hunting or trade of sea turtles or their parts. The government also implements measures to regulate tourism and maritime activities to ensure they do not harm turtle habitats or affect their natural environments. Additionally, environmental monitoring and awareness programs are conducted in collaboration with local and international partners.

The Minister urged citizens, beachgoers, and those involved in marine activities to help protect sea turtles by reducing single-use plastic consumption, safely disposing of waste, and reporting any cases of injury or mortality or encroachments on their habitats.

Dr. Manal Awad reiterated that protecting sea turtles is a shared responsibility requiring collaborative efforts from government institutions, civil society, the private sector, and citizens to ensure the preservation of these unique marine creatures and support the sustainability of marine ecosystems for current and future generations.
