Manchester United Eyes Sander Berge Amid Liverpool Aspirations

Written byFerdous Saeed

Manchester United is intensifying its midfield overhaul as the summer transfer window approaches, with key developments expected at Old Trafford.

Ederson is nearing a transfer from Atalanta, while manager Michael Carrick and the recruitment team are evaluating various alternatives to enhance the squad’s depth and quality.

Among the emerging targets is Fulham’s Sander Berge, a midfielder with proven experience in the Premier League.

The Athletic reports that Manchester United is set to ‘explore’ a potential deal for the Norwegian international, having tracked his impressive performances at Craven Cottage this season.

United had previously considered signing Berge when he transferred from Burnley to Fulham in 2024, and his consistent displays have only bolstered his standing in the league.

The recruitment staff at Old Trafford are actively reviewing several midfield prospects as Carrick works to reshape his team. Alongside players like Sandro Tonali, Carlos Baleba, Adam Wharton, Alex Scott, and Mateus Fernandes, Berge has emerged as a serious candidate for their midfield overhaul.

Fulham currently has no pressing need to sell but would likely demand a fee exceeding the £25 million they paid for him two years ago.

An intriguing aspect of this potential transfer is Berge’s long-standing admiration for Liverpool. In 2019, he expressed that playing at Anfield was a “dream,” recognizing Liverpool as one of the world’s best teams and noting their substantial fan base in Norway.

However, aspirations do not always align with practical opportunities. Liverpool’s midfield features established players like Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister, making it challenging for new signings to secure regular starting positions. Even if new manager Andoni Iraola were interested in bringing in Berge, competition for places would be fierce.

This situation may make Manchester United a more appealing option. With Casemiro’s departure and potential further exits from the midfield, Carrick is on the lookout for players who can compete for immediate first-team roles.

Berge’s physicality, Premier League experience, and tactical acumen could position him as a strong contender for a starting spot rather than just another squad player. Thus, while Liverpool may hold sentimental value for him, United could ultimately present a more compelling opportunity if their interest solidifies into an actual move this summer.
