Manchester United Leads Race to Sign Mateus Fernandes as Arsenal Withdraws Interest

Written byFerdous Saeed

Manchester United is reportedly in a prime position to acquire West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes during the upcoming summer transfer window. Strengthening their midfield has become crucial for the Red Devils following the departure of Casemiro, while the future of Manuel Ugarte at Old Trafford remains uncertain.

The club has already acted quickly, reportedly securing a deal for Atalanta BC midfielder Ederson, but further additions to their midfield are anticipated.

Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson has also been mentioned as a potential target for Manchester United; however, he now seems more likely to join Manchester City instead.

According to a report from The Sun, Manchester United is currently leading the pursuit of Fernandes, although a deal is not expected to be finalized quickly. West Ham has set an £80 million valuation on the Portuguese midfielder, but United hopes to negotiate a lower fee in light of the Hammers’ relegation to the Championship.

Fernandes joined West Ham from Southampton last summer for an initial £38 million, with Southampton retaining a 15 percent sell-on clause. He enjoyed a strong performance in the 2025-26 season, scoring five goals and providing five assists in 40 appearances across all competitions.

Premier League champions Arsenal have also shown significant interest in the 21-year-old; however, reports indicate that they have cooled their pursuit after hesitating at West Ham’s asking price.

Additionally, Fernandes attracted attention from Real Madrid following José Mourinho’s return to the Santiago Bernabéu, but it is unlikely that Los Blancos will formalize their interest.

With Arsenal seemingly stepping back from their pursuit, Manchester United may have an easier path to signing Fernandes; however, negotiations with West Ham are expected to remain complex. The Gunners are now linked with Lille star Ayyoub Bouaddi, who impressed with his performance during Morocco’s 1-1 draw against Brazil at the World Cup.

Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali also remains on Manchester United’s radar, although any move for the Italy international could ignite competition with Arsenal.
