Jawhar Nabil Elected Chair of UNESCO’s International Committee on Physical Education and Sport
Jawhar Nabil, Egypt’s Minister of Youth and Sports, has been elected as the chair of UNESCO’s International Committee on Physical Education and Sport (CIGEPS) during the opening session of the committee’s regular session at the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization headquarters in Paris. The election took place in the presence of Dr. Khaled Anani, Director-General of UNESCO.
Nabil’s election reflects the significant trust placed in Egypt within international forums and acknowledges the vital role played by Egypt’s Ministry of Youth and Sports in supporting sports issues, sustainable development, and enhancing the position of sports as a tool for development and social inclusion.
In his speech following his election, Nabil reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to collaborating with all member states and partners of the committee to strengthen international cooperation in physical education and sports. He emphasized support for efforts aimed at developing inclusive, equitable, and safe sports policies that align with sustainable development goals and UNESCO’s vision of utilizing sports for community empowerment.
Nabil also highlighted that Egypt’s presidency will focus on enhancing international partnerships, expanding the benefits of sports for youth, women, and persons with disabilities, as well as developing funding mechanisms, building capacities, and exchanging experiences among member states.
The International Committee on Physical Education and Sport (CIGEPS) is UNESCO’s intergovernmental body responsible for monitoring the implementation of policies and programs related to physical education and sport while fostering cooperation among member states in this field. It oversees several pioneering international initiatives aimed at promoting sports as a means for development and peace.
