Kylian Mbappé Reflects on Pain of 2022 World Cup Final Loss and Life Changes
Kylian Mbappé, the captain of the French national team and star of Real Madrid, is gearing up for the 2026 World Cup with high aspirations, eager to overcome the disappointment of the Qatar 2022 final, which still looms large in his memory.
Reflecting on the World Cup final against Argentina, Mbappé stated that the match represents one of the most painful moments in his career, despite scoring a historic hat-trick during the game.
He noted that some losses linger more in memory than victories, explaining: “There are many memories, especially defeats, because recalling them can lead you to think about changing the course of events. The Argentina final from 2022 comes to my mind more than the match we won.”.
Mbappé added, “It is very difficult to lose a World Cup final, especially since it happens every four years. Many players who participated in that match will not be around now.”.
His Views on Penalty Shootouts
Mbappé also addressed the penalty shootouts in the World Cup final, asserting that he does not view them as a matter of luck but rather as a technical skill despite their harshness.
He said: “I do not believe in luck when it comes to penalty shootouts; they are not a lottery but a technical skill. However, they remain the most brutal way to lose a World Cup final.”.
Fame and Loss of Privacy
The forward discussed his life off the field, mentioning how his early fame has altered his daily life.
He explained: “For me, an ideal day is returning to simplicity, having peace without disturbances, and being able to do what I want with whom I want, wherever I want. This has become a luxury for me.”.
Despite this, he expressed understanding of the pressures that come with fame, stating: “We should not complain about the love we receive from people; however, at times we are stripped of our humanity.”.
Mbappé added: “We live under constant surveillance where everything is monitored. I’ve learned to accept this reality, even though no one is ever fully prepared for it.”.
His Experience with Paris Saint-Germain
Discussing his previous stint at Paris Saint-Germain before moving to Real Madrid, Mbappé emphasized that his relationship with the club and its president Nasser Al-Khelaifi remains one of mutual respect despite a complicated conclusion to his tenure.
He remarked: “Nasser Al-Khelaifi changed my life; everyone remembers just the ending, which is natural. However, before that, he did a lot for me and my family.”.
Concluding his remarks, Mbappé stated: “When I am in conflict and believe I am right, I go all the way. However, one should not confuse matters; I maintain respect for Paris Saint-Germain and Nasser Al-Khelaifi.”.
