Qatar Breaks World Cup Drought with Historic Draw Against Switzerland

Written byFerdous Saeed

The Qatar national football team achieved a historic milestone by securing their first-ever point in a World Cup after drawing 1-1 with Switzerland in the 2026 tournament.

The match took place at the Levi’s Stadium during the opening round of Group B. Switzerland took the lead in the 17th minute with a penalty scored by Breel Embolo.

Qatar equalized dramatically in stoppage time, with Boualem Khoukhi heading the ball into the net in the fifth minute of added time, capitalizing on a mistake by the Swiss goalkeeper.

This result marks a significant achievement for Qatar, who had previously lost all three matches in their home-hosted World Cup in 2022. The draw against Switzerland not only provides them with their first point but also sets a promising tone for their campaign in this year’s tournament.
