Marsch emphasized that the celebrations were a natural expression of excitement for such a significant match.

The historic win took place on Thursday at BC Place Stadium during the second round of the 2026 World Cup.

The controversy began when Marsch celebrated enthusiastically at the end of the match, prompting Spanish coach Julen Lopetegui to approach him for a discussion. However, the American coach ignored Lopetegui’s attempt to engage and turned away.

In a post-match press conference, Marsch stated, “This is not an ordinary moment for our team and for Canada. I wanted to celebrate with the fans and let the players enjoy this moment, especially considering what Ismael Kone is going through.”.

He added, “We need to maintain our focus and prepare ourselves for success, but I’ve learned in football that moments like these are not easy; you have to celebrate them.”.

Marsch concluded by saying, “We will enjoy this positive experience with the players before turning our attention to our next match against Switzerland.”.
