Julen Lopetegui, the Spanish head coach of the Qatar national team, addressed the media following his team’s hard-fought 1-1 draw against Switzerland in the 2026 World Cup.

The match took place at Levi’s Stadium during the first round of Group B, where Qatar managed to secure a historic equalizer.

Switzerland opened the scoring in the 17th minute with a penalty converted by Breel Embolo, putting Qatar under early pressure.

However, Qatar equalized in stoppage time at 90+5 minutes with a powerful header from Boualem Khoukhi, capitalizing on a moment of uncertainty from the Swiss goalkeeper.

In post-match television comments, Lopetegui noted, “The Swiss players compete at a high level and have an experienced coach. We needed to have a plan because they possess significant quality.”.

He added, “The penalty awarded against us was questionable; it might have been offside. Our focus was on maintaining composure and fortunately, we managed to score.”.

Lopetegui expressed pride in his players’ performance but acknowledged that the upcoming match would be more challenging as they face Canada on their home turf. He remarked, “They demonstrated their quality and speed in their last match.”.

Concluding his remarks, he stated, “We are ready to recover our energy. We have one less day than Canada to recuperate, but we must adapt to the circumstances.”.
