Jürgen Klopp Criticizes 2026 World Cup Rule as Serving Sponsors Over Fans

Jürgen Klopp, the former manager of Liverpool FC, has voiced strong objections to a newly introduced rule for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, asserting that its true purpose extends beyond the announced sporting aspects.

The current edition of the World Cup, taking place in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, has implemented short stoppages during matches to allow players to rest and hydrate, particularly in light of soaring temperatures in some host cities.

While this measure is justified as a means to safeguard player safety and mitigate physical strain, Klopp contends that it is not solely about health considerations but rather serves commercial interests linked to the tournament.

In recent statements to the press, the German coach criticized how certain decisions are made in modern football, arguing that the game is increasingly influenced by officials who are disconnected from the realities faced by players and fans on the ground.

He pointed out that the water break rule is presented as a way to protect players from harsh weather conditions; however, he believes it simultaneously creates additional opportunities for marketing and advertising activities associated with sponsors.

Klopp emphasized that football should maintain its natural rhythm and continuous flow, suggesting that frequent stoppages detract from viewer enjoyment and disrupt the pace of matches during crucial moments.

He raised questions about who truly benefits from these decisions, pondering whether the tournament exists for fans and players or primarily serves the commercial interests of sponsoring companies.

The former Liverpool manager concluded his remarks by asserting that World Cup matches should proceed smoothly without unnecessary interruptions, likening the flow of a match to a flowing river, while these stoppages, in his view, disrupt the football spectacle and provide more space for advertising messages at the expense of the game’s essence.
