Lionel Messi, captain of the Argentine national team, has issued a warning to competing nations ahead of the 2026 World Cup, stating that the “Tango dancers” will enter the tournament with high ambitions and a strong desire to continue their recent successes.

Messi’s comments came after Argentina’s convincing 3-0 victory over Iceland in a friendly match, which served as part of their final preparations for the World Cup. This match marked Messi’s return to scoring just before the official competitions begin.

The Argentine star emphasized that his team is committed to giving their utmost on the pitch, acknowledging the weight of responsibility they carry following their achievements in recent years.

He noted that maintaining such a high level of success is challenging, particularly with the increasing strength of competition in every tournament. Nevertheless, Messi stressed that the Argentine squad is accustomed to handling pressure and significant challenges.

He added that his team will strive to replicate their past successes despite the difficult task ahead, affirming that while football offers no guarantees, Argentina will be a formidable and resilient opponent for all teams.

Argentina’s Journey in the World Cup

Argentina will compete in Group D of the 2026 World Cup, alongside Algeria, Austria, and Jordan.

The reigning champions will kick off their campaign against Algeria on June 17, followed by a match against Austria on June 22, and will conclude their group stage matches against Jordan on June 28.

A Golden Era Under Messi’s Leadership

The Argentine national team is currently experiencing one of its most successful periods in recent decades, having secured four titles in just five years.

They won the FIFA World Cup in 2022 and also claimed the Finalissima title that same year. Additionally, Argentina triumphed in the Copa America twice consecutively in 2021 and 2024, solidifying their return to the pinnacle of global football under Messi and his golden generation.
