Gary Neville Calls Cole Palmer a ‘Gold’ Signing for Manchester United
Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has expressed his belief that signing Chelsea’s Cole Palmer would be a significant move for the Red Devils, although he doubts Chelsea will be willing to let the playmaker go.
Palmer has been linked with a potential departure from Stamford Bridge following a lackluster 2025-26 season, during which Chelsea finished 10th in the Premier League and missed out on European competition.
The 24-year-old missed out on Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for the 2026 World Cup, having faced injuries and fitness issues throughout the season. Despite these challenges, he managed to net 11 goals in 34 appearances across all competitions.
Reports suggest that Xabi Alonso’s team may need to offload at least one first-team player this summer, with speculation that Palmer could be available for around £80 million.
This year, Palmer reportedly became disenchanted with his situation at Chelsea, and sources indicate that he would consider a move to Manchester United, a club he is believed to support.

Could Palmer Become Man Utd’s Next ‘Gold’ Signing?
Neville sees Palmer as fitting the profile of a ‘gold’ player—someone who could have an impact reminiscent of past greats like Rio Ferdinand, Wayne Rooney, and Roy Keane. He shared his thoughts on Ferdinand’s YouTube channel:.
“When Manchester United signed Bryan Robson, Ron Atkinson remarked something like ‘this is no risk, this is gold.’.
“Harry Kane would have been that for United; he would have been gold. You joining from Leeds, Wazza [Rooney] from Everton, Roy Keane from Nottingham Forest—those were all gold signings.
“Declan Rice was similar before joining Arsenal. They are guarantees; they will ultimately seem like bargains.”.
Neville added that if Sir Alex Ferguson were still managing the club, he would have ensured Kane was signed for Old Trafford. “Declan Rice would have been pursued as well,” he said.

Neville’s Transfer Prediction for Palmer
Neville believes Palmer fits into the ‘gold’ category of players that Manchester United should target. However, he cannot foresee Chelsea allowing the midfielder to leave, as he is contracted until June 2033.
“I appreciate the signings of [Matheus] Cunha and [Bryan] Mbeumo last summer because they have Premier League experience,” Neville noted. “While they weren’t ‘gold,’ they reduced risk due to their familiarity with the league.”.
“There’s talk of Cole Palmer being a potential gold signing for Manchester United if he were to come to Old Trafford. I don’t think it will happen; I believe Chelsea will keep him. Such players are rare and only become available every few years.”.
Although acquiring Palmer seems unlikely at this point, Manchester United has already secured a deal for Brazilian midfielder Ederson from Atalanta BC for approximately £39 million. The Red Devils are also pursuing their primary target Elliot Anderson and are reportedly in discussions with West Ham United regarding a lucrative transfer for Mateus Fernandes.
