De La Fuente: Yamal and Teammates Ready for 2026 World Cup, Decision on June 15
Spain’s head coach, Luis de la Fuente, has provided an update on the readiness of three players—Lamine Yamal, Nico Williams, and Victor Munoz—for the upcoming 2026 World Cup. He confirmed that they are nearing fitness for the opening match.
De la Fuente stated that all three players are progressing well in their rehabilitation programs and are expected to be available for the match against Cape Verde on June 15, provided they do not experience any setbacks.
Lamine Yamal is currently recovering from a hamstring injury he sustained in April, while Nico Williams and Victor Munoz are undergoing rehabilitation for various injuries.
The trio remains at the national team’s training camp in Chattanooga, Tennessee, continuing their recovery while Spain played a friendly match against Peru without them.
In comments to reporters, De la Fuente said: “If everything goes as planned, the three players will be available on June 15, and I believe they will be able to participate.”.
He added: “The key is to adhere to the rehabilitation schedules so that they are ready to join the team and participate in at least part of the match.”.
Spain is set to face Peru in a friendly before heading to Atlanta for their first match in the World Cup.
The Spanish coach emphasized the importance of this friendly encounter, stating: “For us, this is a very important match; we do not treat it merely as a friendly.”.
Spain enters the World Cup as one of the top contenders for the title, especially following their victory in the UEFA Euro 2024. Expectations suggest they have one of the highest chances of winning the tournament.
