Wolves Receive Major Proposal for Defender Bastien Meupiyou from Borussia Dortmund

Written byFerdous Saeed

Wolverhampton Wanderers are reportedly poised to benefit financially from increasing interest in defender Bastien Meupiyou, particularly from Borussia Dortmund.

In August 2024, Wolves acquired the young French talent from Nantes for approximately £4.2 million on a long-term contract. However, less than a year later, Meupiyou transferred to newly-promoted Primeira Liga side Alverca without having made a first-team appearance for Wolves.

This move has significantly altered the trajectory of the 20-year-old’s career, as he has since made 30 appearances for Alverca, contributing to their surprising 11th-place finish in Portugal’s top flight.

Consequently, there has been speculation about whether Wolves would activate an alleged buy-back clause or monitor offers for the former France Under-18 international, given their 50% sell-on clause.

Dortmund Makes Significant Offer for Former Wolves Player

Journalist Sebastiao Sousa-Pinto reports that Wolves do not have a buy-back clause for Meupiyou, contrary to previous claims. Nevertheless, Borussia Dortmund has made a proposal amounting to €12 million (£10.37 million) plus an additional €5 million (£4.32 million) in performance-related add-ons.

The report indicates that Meupiyou is “very likely” to depart Alverca soon, which could lead to a substantial financial boost for Wolves.

Wolves stand to earn an immediate profit of approximately £5.18 million from this transfer, surpassing their initial investment in Meupiyou.

With only two years remaining on his contract with Alverca and the prospect of enhancing their first-team squad, it is anticipated that the Portuguese club will be amenable to negotiating a sale.

A Positive Development for Fosun International

The ownership group Fosun International has faced criticism regarding player signings at Wolves in recent years. However, they deserve recognition for successfully recouping funds through player sales, including those of Max Kilman, Matheus Nunes, and Pedro Neto.

The challenge has often been how they reinvest these funds, but this situation may signal a shift as they gear up for the upcoming Championship season.
