Minister of Water Resources Calls for Expansion in Water Facility Documentation
Dr. Hani Sweilam, Egypt’s Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, convened a meeting to review the progress of the national project aimed at rehabilitating water facilities, which is being implemented under a four-year cooperation protocol that commenced in May 2024.
The minister emphasized that the project aims to enhance the efficiency and safety of water facilities across the country, contributing to improved water management and distribution. It also seeks to boost the operational efficiency of control facilities while safeguarding lives and addressing rapid climate change challenges.
During the meeting, a unified geographic database of water facilities was presented, comprising 55,998 installations. This assessment identified and prioritized 3,047 facilities based on their technical condition.
Additionally, the results from the first phase of consulting services were reviewed, highlighting 417 facilities requiring replacement or renovation. Necessary studies, designs, and contractual documents have been prepared for these projects.
The meeting also addressed the status of the second phase of the project, which involves preparing studies and designs for an additional 200 facilities in preparation for rehabilitation work. Coordination between the ministry and the Engineering Authority continues to ensure project phases are completed effectively.
Dr. Sweilam instructed that efforts should continue on replacement and renovation works for priority facilities. The ministry is committed to fulfilling its primary goal by completing rehabilitation of all structures classified as very dangerous or dangerous. Furthermore, he stressed the importance of expanding documentation and coding of water facilities to support asset management systems and enhance operational efficiency in line with the second generation of the water system 2.0.
