Egypt’s Prime Minister Opens Smart Fuel Station in Cairo

Written byNoha El Shafie

Dr. Mostafa Madbouly, Egypt’s Prime Minister, inaugurated a new smart fuel station in the Al-Zawiya Al-Hamra area of Cairo, following a visit to the headquarters of the Public Transport Authority.

During the opening, Madbouly emphasized the government’s commitment to the energy sector, highlighting its crucial role in achieving comprehensive development. He reiterated the administration’s focus on promoting efficiency within its institutions to enhance service quality and ensure sustainability.

Cairo Governor stated that this new fuel station marks a significant advancement in managing the petroleum resources for municipal vehicles, transitioning from traditional operational methods to an integrated smart system designed to ensure accurate fuel supply operations and minimize waste while maintaining stringent oversight on consumption.

Madbouly toured the facility and received a detailed briefing from Dr. Ibrahim Saber, who explained that the project aims to enhance efficiency and effectiveness while ensuring optimal resource utilization. The initiative also seeks to achieve high levels of transparency and accountability through an automated system that monitors petroleum consumption rates during fueling operations and connects processes electronically to prevent any manipulation attempts.

The governor noted that positive outcomes from the governance system at this station have made it a model for replication at other fuel stations under municipal management. Currently, plans are underway to develop a similar model at the Helwan station.

Engineer Nermin Makram Fahmy, acting director of infrastructure management and information security at the governorate’s information center, stated that the station was constructed by the Arab Organization for Industrialization. It spans 3,017 square meters in Al-Zawiya Al-Hamra and services 678 vehicles belonging to the governorate’s headquarters and Cairo’s Cleanliness and Beautification Authority, as well as meeting needs in eastern, northern, and western districts.

Fahmy added that implementing the new governance system at the station has significantly contributed to substantial fuel savings, amounting to approximately 95,600 liters per month—a reduction of 62%. This translates into monthly financial savings nearing two million Egyptian pounds, with annual savings exceeding one million liters due to reduced consumption and improved operational efficiency. Additionally, there has been a 44.7% reduction in oil usage for vehicles.

Side of the tour

The station features a modern electronic system comprising a smart ring attached to vehicle fuel tank openings. This ring prevents fuel spillage while accurately recording input and consumption amounts, ensuring no tampering can occur.

Khaled Hanafy, station manager, explained that the facility includes a designated tank area with four underground tanks holding a total capacity of 160,000 liters. It also features five fuel dispensing pumps equipped with twenty nozzles for refueling. Furthermore, it houses a comprehensive service building over two floors covering more than 1,000 square meters with technical workshops and a control room designed for precise monitoring of vehicle consumption levels against actual stock in tanks automatically.

Hanafy highlighted that advanced protective systems are integrated into the station to ensure operational continuity efficiently. These include fire alarm systems and manual extinguishing systems alongside an emergency generator. Modern control panels provide real-time reports on tank conditions and fueling pump status while advanced technological protection systems prevent theft or fuel wastage while ensuring product quality and safety from impurities.
