Egypt and Japan Strengthen Cooperation to Boost Private Sector and Upgrade Cairo Airport

Badr Abdel Aati, Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, met with Dr. Akihiko Tanaka, President of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), during his bilateral visit to Japan.

The meeting focused on enhancing developmental cooperation between the two countries across several priority sectors, including education, transportation, and financing for the private sector.

Minister Abdel Aati expressed appreciation for the close collaboration with JICA under the Egypt-Japan partnership initiative in education, commending the tangible results achieved through joint educational projects.

He also emphasized the importance of continuing cooperation to support the regional standing of the Egyptian-Japanese University of Science and Technology, enhancing its academic and research roles, including expanding partnerships with Arab and African universities and supporting its role in training African professionals within the TICAD framework.

Additionally, the minister welcomed JICA’s readiness to strengthen trilateral cooperation with the National Academy for Combating Corruption, stressing the importance of developing this collaboration to include long-term institutional support programs that enhance the academy’s regional role in areas such as cybersecurity, combating organized crime, and institutional governance.

The discussion also covered existing cooperation in the transportation sector. Minister Abdel Aati expressed eagerness to enhance bilateral cooperation in developing Cairo International Airport and Line 4 of the metro system to accommodate the increasing influx of tourists to Egypt.

Regarding financing for private sector investments, Minister Abdel Aati underscored the importance of strengthening JICA’s role in supporting private sector investments in Egypt, particularly in small and medium-sized enterprises and renewable energy sectors, aligning with Egypt’s priorities for sustainable economic growth.

At the conclusion of their meeting, both parties reaffirmed their commitment to continued coordination and joint efforts to support Egyptian-Japanese partnership and build upon achievements made over recent years that serve the mutual interests of both nations.
