Foreign Minister Highlights Educational Cooperation as Key to Egypt-Japan Strategic Partnership

Dr. Badr Abdel Aty, Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, met with Yohei Matsumoto, Japan’s Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, during his visit to Japan.

During the meeting, Minister Abdel Aty expressed deep appreciation for the outstanding educational partnership between Egypt and Japan. He highlighted the “Egyptian-Japanese Education Initiative,” launched in 2016, which has significantly contributed to the development of Egypt’s educational system across various levels.

He also praised Matsumoto’s visit to Egypt in January 2026, marking it as his first official trip abroad since assuming office, emphasizing Japan’s commitment to educational collaboration with Egypt.

Abdel Aty reaffirmed that educational cooperation is a cornerstone of the Egyptian-Japanese strategic partnership, receiving substantial interest and support from the political leadership in both countries. He expressed hopes to build on the success of the Japanese schools project and expand the number of targeted schools in the coming years, thus enhancing the benefits derived from Japan’s distinguished educational model.

The minister also commended the successful establishment of the first Egyptian-Japanese Institute for Advanced Technical Education in September 2025, as well as the Egyptian-Japanese University of Science and Technology and Research and Innovation. He stressed the importance of continuing cooperation in technical and technological education, which plays a direct role in preparing qualified Egyptian personnel to meet labor market needs and contribute to the country’s developmental and economic priorities.

He emphasized the significance of joint Egyptian-Japanese scholarships offered to African students under the TICAD framework, highlighting their role in training and preparing African professionals. Abdel Aty expressed eagerness for the Egyptian-Japanese University of Science and Technology to host more African students, supporting outcomes from the ninth TICAD summit related to human capacity development in Africa.

The minister confirmed Egypt’s readiness to collaborate with Japan in transferring Japanese educational expertise to African countries based on successful implementation experiences in Egypt through trilateral cooperation frameworks between both sides and African nations.
