Argentinian football superstar Lionel Messi has received yet another accolade, being awarded the Princess of Asturias Award for Sports for 2026. This honor comes as he prepares to participate in the upcoming FIFA World Cup with his national team.

The captain of the Argentina national team is looking forward to another World Cup appearance, as he and coach Lionel Scaloni aim to defend the title they won in the last edition of the tournament, with high hopes of continuing their international dominance.

The international award was given to Messi in recognition of his extraordinary career, which has placed him among the greatest football players in history, both at the club and national levels, as well as for his humanitarian impact off the pitch.

In his first comments following the announcement, Messi expressed to Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo that this recognition holds special significance for him. He emphasized that his ties to Spain and Catalonia remain an important part of his life and career.

The Argentinian star noted that he spent many years in Spain during his football journey, and that his children were born there, which has fostered a deep affection from the Spanish people towards him. This connection enhances the value of this award for him.

Messi also acknowledged that his successes were not solely individual achievements but were made possible through substantial support from teammates throughout his career, as well as from his family and everyone who has stood by him along the way.

He concluded his remarks with an inspiring message, hoping that his journey would serve as motivation for children and young people to pursue their dreams. He affirmed that determination, hard work, and respect for sports values are the true foundation of success.

Messi’s selection was made following a meeting of a specialized jury, which recognized him for his significant sports accomplishments and ongoing humanitarian efforts, particularly his support for projects aimed at improving educational opportunities and healthcare for underprivileged children worldwide.
