On Wednesday, June 4, Dr. Badr Abdel Aty, Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, met with Taro Kono, a member of the Japanese House of Representatives and Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party. This meeting took place during his visit to Japan.

Minister Abdel Aty praised the rapid development of Egyptian-Japanese relations since they were elevated to a strategic partnership in 2023. He expressed appreciation for Japan’s significant participation in the official opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum in November 2025, emphasizing that the museum represents a distinguished model of successful bilateral partnership and is highly valued by Egypt for Japan’s role in its realization.

The Minister also highlighted the importance of enhancing parliamentary cooperation between the two countries, commending the vital role played by the Egyptian-Japanese Parliamentary Friendship Association in fostering institutional communication, exchanging expertise, and supporting pathways for bilateral cooperation across various fields.

Abdel Aty expressed gratitude for the visit by a delegation from Japan’s House of Councillors to Egypt last January, which included members from the Official Development Assistance Committee. He noted that this visit allowed the delegation to witness firsthand the developmental impact of Japanese cooperation projects in Egypt and to meet with several senior Egyptian officials. He emphasized that this was the first such visit in seven years, reflecting a direct understanding of the developmental achievements made under Egyptian-Japanese partnership.

The Foreign Minister praised Japan’s role in supporting several major development projects in Egypt, particularly highlighting the Grand Egyptian Museum project, as well as distinguished partnerships in education through Japanese-Egyptian schools and the fourth line of Cairo’s metro system, among other strategic initiatives that have directly contributed to economic and social development efforts.

Minister Abdel Aty reviewed positive developments in Egypt’s economy following economic reforms implemented over recent years. He expressed eagerness to leverage available investment opportunities in Egypt, especially in renewable energy and infrastructure sectors, particularly water desalination projects.

The meeting also included an exchange of views on regional developments in the Middle East, including situations in Gaza, Iran, Syria, Yemen, Lebanon, and issues related to water security.
