Messi Sparks Concern in Argentina Camp Ahead of 2026 World Cup
The Argentine national team has begun its preparations for the 2026 World Cup in the United States, with significant attention focused on the physical condition of captain Lionel Messi. During the initial training sessions, Messi participated only in individual drills.
Messi is currently undergoing a rehabilitation program to recover from a muscle strain in his left hamstring, an injury that has kept him off the pitch since late May.
Despite this setback, there is optimism within the medical team regarding his chances of participating in Argentina’s opening match against Algeria on June 16.
The captain joined the training camp in Kansas City, where he is engaging in specialized workouts separate from the main group, alongside several teammates who are also on rehabilitation programs.
The Argentine Football Association confirmed in an official statement that players dealing with minor injuries or physical issues are continuing their training under medical supervision, noting that their recovery processes are progressing positively.
On a brighter note for head coach Lionel Scaloni, he received good news with the return of Christian Romero and Julian Alvarez to full training after recovering from their injuries.
Argentina is scheduled to play a friendly match against Honduras on June 6, followed by another against Iceland on June 9, as part of their final preparations before commencing their title defense at the World Cup.
