Casemiro: Brazil Not the Front-Runner for 2026 World Cup Despite Ambitions
Brazilian star Casemiro has stated that his national team should not be considered the top contender for the 2026 World Cup, despite a promising mix of experience and youth. The tournament, which will feature 48 teams for the first time, is set to take place in the United States, Canada, and Mexico from June 11 to July 19.
In remarks reported by Brazilian network Globo, Casemiro acknowledged Brazil’s high aspirations entering the tournament but emphasized that they are under less pressure compared to some competitors. He remarked, “We are not the favorites to win the World Cup. While we have a strong team combining experience and youth, this time we are taking a step back and staying on high alert.”.
The former Manchester United midfielder highlighted the team’s balanced approach with young talents alongside seasoned players, seeing it as a crucial strength moving forward. He said, “This blend is good and is key to our success.”.
Casemiro also spoke about the coaching staff led by Italian manager Carlo Ancelotti, noting his extensive experience despite this being Ancelotti’s first World Cup. He expressed confidence that Brazil enters the tournament with strong motivation and a persistent desire to compete.
He stated, “I believe we are coming in strong, but there are other teams currently ahead of us without needing to name names. We understand that some teams are at a different level right now; however, Brazil remains a strong and ambitious team.”.
The midfielder pointed out that recent changes within the coaching staff have impacted stability within the team over extended periods. He clarified that they are still in the process of building this stability.
Concluding his statements, Casemiro said, “Expectations are always high when it comes to the World Cup. We are not participating just to be present; we aim to compete for the title and fulfill our dream. We are working hard towards that goal.”.
The Brazilian national team is preparing for a friendly match against Egypt in Ohio as part of their final preparations for the World Cup.
Brazil will compete in Group C of the 2026 World Cup alongside Morocco, Scotland, and Haiti in what appears to be a relatively balanced group ahead of the tournament’s kickoff.
