Egypt Engages Internationally in Dementia Care Strategies

Regional Workshop on National Dementia Plans.

The Egyptian Ministry of Health and Population participated in the “National Dementia Plans Pan-Regional Workshop 2026,” held in London, UK. The event was organized by Alzheimer’s Disease International (ADI) in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO).

Dr. Hossam Abdel Ghaffar, the ministry’s official spokesperson, stated that this participation reflects Egypt’s commitment to enhancing mental health services and care for the elderly. He noted that the workshop aims to assist countries in formulating and implementing their national dementia plans, aligning with the WHO’s action plan through 2031.

The workshop sessions reviewed progress made in national plans and discussed challenges and solutions through sharing international best practices. The focus was also on strengthening public health responses, integrating diagnostic and treatment services, and the role of language and terminology in shaping community awareness and reducing stigma associated with dementia.

Abdel Ghaffar emphasized that the ministry’s involvement in international events showcases its dedication to fostering global cooperation and leveraging international expertise. This supports Egypt’s efforts to develop a comprehensive national strategy for dementia care that adheres to the latest scientific standards, ensuring exceptional health and psychological care for the elderly.

The Egyptian delegation was led by Dr. Ayman Abbas, head of the Central Administration for Mental Health and Addiction Treatment, and included Dr. Noha Sabry, Director of Research at the administration and board member of the Egyptian Alzheimer’s Association; Dr. Maysaa Eid Afifi, Director of Geriatric Psychiatry and Treasurer of the association; and Dr. Alaa Al-Madani, Director of Foreign Relations.
