USA Defeats Australia 2-0 to Advance to World Cup Round of 32
The United States men’s national soccer team secured a decisive 2-0 victory over Australia on Friday, advancing to the Round of 32 in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Americans took an early lead in the 11th minute when Australian defender Cameron Burgess accidentally scored an own goal, giving the hosts a quick advantage in the match.
After a well-organized attack down the left flank led by Florian Balogun, Burgess attempted to clear a cross into the penalty area but inadvertently redirected the ball into his own net.
In the second half, the United States continued to dominate and extended their lead with a goal from Alex Freeman. He capitalized on confusion within the Australian defense to head the ball powerfully into the net.
The goal was confirmed by German referee Felix Zwayer after consulting VAR technology.
