Kylian Mbappe Leads France to Victory Over Senegal, Breaks Goalscoring Record

Written byFerdous Saeed

Kylian Mbappe showcased his World Cup brilliance once again as he led France to a 3-1 victory over Senegal in their Group I match held in New Jersey. The Real Madrid star, who previously scored four goals in the 2018 World Cup and eight in Qatar, added two more to his tally in the ongoing tournament.

France struggled in the first half, with their attacking players, including Mbappe, Michael Olise, Ousmane Dembele, and Desire Doue, failing to make an impact. Senegal dominated the opening period, with Nicolas Jackson hitting the post and Ismaila Sarr missing a close-range chance.

However, the tide turned after halftime. Following a controversial non-penalty call against Sadio Mane for a challenge on Mbappe, the French side regrouped and found their rhythm. Just moments after the penalty incident, Mbappe made a brilliant run that set up Olise for a perfectly weighted through ball. He then calmly finished past Senegalese goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.

Bradley Barcola soon doubled France’s lead before Ibrahim Mbaye pulled one back for Senegal. Yet, it was Mbappe who sealed the match with a stunning long-range strike that not only secured victory but also established him as France’s all-time leading goalscorer with 58 goals in just 99 international appearances.

The Key Moment

For a brief moment during the match, it seemed that the referee’s decision not to award a penalty for Mane’s challenge would overshadow France’s performance. Referee Alireza Faghani reviewed the play but ultimately ruled that Mbappe initiated contact. Despite this setback, Mbappe and Olise quickly shifted focus to ensure France took control of the game.

Mbappe’s Goalscoring Aspirations

With this record-breaking performance, Mbappe has positioned himself as not just France’s top scorer but also as a contender for further accolades. His World Cup goal tally now stands at 14 goals in just 15 appearances, surpassing legends such as Pele and Just Fontaine.

As he heads into France’s next match against Iraq, Mbappe will be keen to extend his record further and inch closer to Miroslav Klose’s all-time World Cup record of 16 goals. Meanwhile, Senegal will seek redemption in their upcoming match against Norway.
