Spain’s Coach Analyzes Draw Against Cape Verde in World Cup Opener
Luis de la Fuente, the head coach of Spain’s national team, expressed his disappointment following a goalless draw against Cape Verde in their opening match of the 2026 World Cup. He noted that while his team displayed good offensive performance, they lacked effectiveness in front of goal.
In post-match remarks, De la Fuente stated that Spain created numerous chances and was the dominant side for most of the match. However, he acknowledged that Cape Verde’s strong defensive organization made it challenging to find the back of the net.
The coach explained that Cape Verde relied on a compact defense and closed off spaces, forcing Spain to exert significant effort to create opportunities. He added that the team needs to improve its accuracy and speed in ball movement for upcoming matches.
De la Fuente pointed out that the lack of a finishing touch was the main reason for not securing a victory, despite multiple attacking attempts and a strong desire from his players to win. He emphasized that such encounters are particularly complex in tournaments like the World Cup.
He also discussed the participation of young players Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams, confirming that the coaching staff aims to gradually increase their playing time to help them reach peak physical and technical levels throughout the tournament.
Concluding his comments, De la Fuente expressed confidence in the team’s ability to improve in future matches and voiced hopes for a better performance against Saudi Arabia as they continue their quest for qualification to the next round.
