Cape Verde Secures Historic Draw Against Spain in 2026 World Cup

Written byFerdous Saeed

Spain was held to a goalless draw by Cape Verde in their opening match of the 2026 World Cup group stage, despite dominating possession and creating several scoring opportunities.

The Spanish team, known as “La Roja,” entered the match with determination, seeking an early goal. Fabián Ruiz nearly broke the deadlock after a brilliant through ball from Pedri, but the Cape Verdean defense intervened to deny him.

Spain came close to scoring on multiple occasions, most notably when Ferran Torres struck from close range, only to see his shot hit the crossbar, wasting a golden opportunity for the European side.

The Spanish continued their offensive pressure throughout the match, with Mikel Oyarzabal almost giving his team the lead with a powerful header from a rebound. However, goalkeeper Vozinha made a spectacular save, deflecting the ball for a corner kick.

Mikel Merino also squandered another chance after unleashing a low shot from inside the penalty area, but Vozinha’s heroics kept Cape Verde’s net intact until the final whistle.

As a result of this match, both Spain and Cape Verde earned one point each at the start of their group campaign, leaving the battle for top position to be decided in the upcoming rounds.
