Morocco Will Not Host African Tournaments Again Following AFCON 2025 Controversy
Fouzi Lekjaa, the President of the Moroccan Football Federation, has announced that Morocco will not submit any bids to host future African tournaments following the turmoil surrounding the final of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025.
Morocco hosted the last edition of the tournament in January, which ended in significant controversy after Senegal withdrew from the final match against Morocco.
In a press statement, Lekjaa said, “Morocco will not bid again to host any African competition, and we wish good luck to any country that wishes to organize.”.
The crisis escalated when Senegal was initially awarded the title but later had it revoked by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), which then awarded it to Morocco.
In response, the Senegalese Football Federation filed an official complaint with the Court of Arbitration for Sport against the decision to withdraw the title, potentially leading to a prolonged legal dispute.
This decision by Morocco raises questions about the future of hosting African tournaments amid recent tensions.
