Travel Challenges for Teams in 2026 World Cup Group Stage
The 2026 World Cup is approaching, yet several national teams are still preparing for their opening matches. Their groundwork began earlier this year with the selection of training bases and accommodations.
Each national federation has already informed FIFA about their chosen hotels and training facilities for the tournament. Cities such as Kansas City, Seattle, and Miami are set to host multiple teams throughout the event.
Analyzing the group-stage schedule reveals the travel demands each team will face. For instance, Brazil will establish its base at the New York Red Bulls training center in Morristown, New Jersey. This location was strategically selected as all three of Brazil’s group-stage matches will take place on the East Coast—in New Jersey, Philadelphia, and Miami.
Consequently, Brazil is expected to cover approximately 3,740 kilometers during the group stage, including round trips from their base to each match venue. Among the 48 nations participating in the tournament, Brazil has one of the shortest travel distances.

Before finalizing their base camps and accommodations, FIFA provides a list of potential venues for each nation. Following an assessment post-group-stage draw—where Brazil confirmed its East Coast base after being placed in Group C—each federation selects a location that best meets its travel requirements.
In this context, Curacao faces the most arduous itinerary. Making its World Cup debut this year as the smallest territory in the tournament, Curacao will be based in Boca Raton, Florida, but will need to travel over 10,000 kilometers during the group stage—averaging more than 1,500 kilometers per match.
Austria (Santa Barbara, California) and Bosnia-Herzegovina (St Louis, Missouri) find themselves in a similar predicament. Both European teams are returning to the World Cup this year and will need to cover approximately 9,500 kilometers during the group stage to advance to knockout rounds.

The Travel Dynamics of Host Nations

The tournament is co-hosted by Canada, the United States and Mexico. While most matches will be held in the United States—where they will not benefit from an advantageous travel schedule—the U.S. team is set to travel around 3,400 kilometers during group play across venues in Los Angeles and Seattle from their base in Irvine California.
The same situation applies to Canada. Utilizing only two stadiums—Vancouver and Toronto—which are quite distant from each other; Canada will cover about 6,712 kilometers while facing Bosnia-Herzegovina Switzerland and Qatar on home soil.
This makes Canada one of the teams traveling extensively during this tournament. In contrast to Canada and U.S., Mexico—the third co-host—will enjoy a favorable travel schedule by playing solely within Mexico City and Monterrey covering just around 840 kilometers during group play.
Apart from Mexico’s advantageous position; five other nations have opted for bases near or within Mexican territory: Uruguay Tunisia South Africa Colombia South Korea Iran switched its base from Arizona to Tijuana due to tensions with U.S military presence. The remaining nations are based primarily across the U.S., which previously hosted the World Cup in1994 and will again host most of its104 matches this time around.
