Manchester United Faces Competition from Real Madrid for Mateus Fernandes
Manchester United’s pursuit of West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes has hit a significant obstacle, as Real Madrid reportedly enters the race for the young talent during the summer transfer window.
The 21-year-old Fernandes struggled to keep West Ham in the Premier League last season and is expected to depart the club following their relegation. Despite this setback, Manchester United remains interested in him, with reports suggesting that the Red Devils believe he has the potential to reach the same level as Declan Rice.
West Ham has set an asking price of £80 million for Fernandes, although their bargaining power has diminished due to their relegation to the Championship for the 2026-27 season.

Real Madrid Joins the Race for Fernandes
According to The Sun, Manchester United will face stiff competition from Real Madrid, who are keen on signing Fernandes this summer. Jose Mourinho, set to return as head coach at Real Madrid, is reportedly a strong admirer of the midfielder.
Additionally, Paris Saint-Germain is closely monitoring Fernandes’ situation, with West Ham hoping that this interest will spark a bidding war among potential suitors.
The Hammers acquired Fernandes from Southampton for approximately £38 million last summer and stand to make a significant profit should he be sold in the upcoming transfer window.
During the 2025-26 season, Fernandes scored five goals and provided five assists in 42 appearances for West Ham, including three goals and four assists in 36 Premier League matches.

Fernandes’ Value and Future Prospects
Fernandes has also earned caps with the Portugal national team during his time at West Ham but was not included in his country’s squad for the upcoming 2026 World Cup.
He began his professional career at Sporting Lisbon before moving to Southampton in the summer of 2024, where he netted four goals in 46 appearances before joining West Ham.
The Hammers had hoped to retain Fernandes if they had avoided relegation but now face challenges as he appears unwilling to play in the Championship next season. Manchester United is reportedly looking to sign three new central midfielders this summer, with a deal for Ederson from Atalanta BC believed to be already agreed upon.
