Written byFerdous Saeed

Abu al-Fazl Basandeh, Iran’s ambassador to Mexico, has revealed details regarding the arrangements for the Iranian national football team’s stay and movements during the 2026 World Cup. He confirmed that the team will only be allowed to remain in the United States on the days of their official matches.

The Iranian team is set to compete in Group G alongside Egypt, Belgium, and New Zealand, preparing for three challenging matches in the tournament’s opening round.

In a press statement, the Iranian ambassador explained that the team’s delegation will travel to the United States only on match day and will leave immediately after their games, adhering to regulations concerning their stay during the tournament.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has stated that her country is open to hosting the Iranian delegation throughout its participation in the World Cup. She emphasized Mexico’s willingness to accommodate the team between matches.

Sheinbaum added that U.S. authorities prefer not to host the Iranian team on rest days, prompting Iran to seek an alternative arrangement. She noted that Mexico has agreed to host the delegation without any reservations.

The Iranian team’s World Cup journey will commence with a match against New Zealand in Los Angeles on June 15, followed by a clash with Belgium in the same city. They will conclude their group stage matches against Egypt in Seattle.

In light of these arrangements, the Iranian Football Federation has decided to make Mexico the base for its team during the 2026 World Cup, replacing an earlier plan for a training camp in Tucson, Arizona.
