The Mexican government is implementing extraordinary measures in preparation for the 2026 World Cup, as President mexico/">Claudia Sheinbaum has issued a decree mandating remote work for federal employees in Mexico City on June 11, coinciding with the tournament’s opening match.

This decision is part of a broader plan aimed at reducing traffic congestion and facilitating mobility within the city, which will host the opening match along with various related events. There are expectations of large crowds and visitors arriving from around the globe.

According to the decree, federal government agencies are required to enforce a work-from-home policy for employees residing in Mexico City, with exceptions made for essential sectors such as healthcare, security services, critical infrastructure, and organizations directly involved in organizing the tournament.

The decree also includes a suspension of classes across all educational institutions, from preschools to universities, both public and private, throughout the opening day to help alleviate traffic density and ease movement for citizens.

The Mexican government has urged private sector companies to adopt similar measures by expanding remote work on this day to ensure smooth traffic flow and the successful execution of the World Cup 2026 opening events.
