Manchester United Decides Against Permanent Exit for Young Striker Ethan Wheatley

Written byFerdous Saeed

Manchester United has reportedly decided to retain young striker Ethan Wheatley, rejecting any notion of a permanent transfer during the summer window. This decision comes as the 20-year-old prepares to return to Old Trafford after a challenging 2025-26 season spent on loan at Northampton Town and Bradford City.

During his loan spell, Wheatley scored three goals and provided four assists for Northampton before moving to Bradford, where he struggled to make an impact, failing to score or assist in 12 appearances.

Wheatley remains under contract with Manchester United until the end of the 2027-28 season but has only made four appearances for the first team since advancing through the youth ranks. According to Football Insider, club officials still have high hopes for the striker, born in 2006, which is why they are not considering a permanent exit this summer.

FC Schalke 04, recently promoted back to the Bundesliga, has shown interest in Wheatley but would likely only be able to secure him on a loan basis for now. It remains uncertain whether Manchester United plans to enter into contract discussions with Wheatley’s representatives, as failing to do so could lead to a reduced transfer fee if he is sold in 2027.

The striker has been with Manchester United since 2015 and made a notable impact at youth level, scoring 28 goals in 56 appearances across both Under-18 and Under-21 teams. He made his senior debut for Manchester United in April 2024 during a Premier League match against Sheffield United and has since appeared in two more top-flight games against Crystal Palace and Arsenal.

Wheatley’s most recent appearance for the Red Devils came in October 2024 during a 5-2 EFL Cup victory over Leicester City. He has also represented England at the Under-20 level.

If Wheatley had remained with Manchester United throughout the 2025-26 season, he might have been considered Michael Carrick’s sixth-choice striker behind Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, Joshua Zirkzee, Chido Obi, and Benjamin Sesko. As the team approaches the 2026-27 season, Zirkzee is expected to leave Old Trafford, but Carrick will still have plenty of options up front.

Mbeumo and Cunha are typically utilized on the wings while Obi is yet to make his senior debut. This situation could create opportunities for Wheatley to gain playing time. However, with Patrick Dorgu and Amad Diallo also available for wing positions, Mbeumo and Cunha are likely first choices should Sesko be unavailable.

A temporary exit appears to be the most sensible option for Wheatley at this time; however, if he does not meet expectations elsewhere next season, a permanent move in 2027 may become necessary.
