Thomas Tuchel Confirms Harry Kane’s Fitness Ahead of England’s Warm-Up Match Against New Zealand

Written byFerdous Saeed

England manager Thomas Tuchel has quelled any concerns regarding Harry Kane’s fitness ahead of the World Cup warm-up match against New Zealand scheduled for Saturday.

Kane, who is crucial to England’s aspirations of breaking a 60-year drought for World Cup success, was substituted in each of the four knockout matches during Euro 2024, with two of those games extending into extra time.

Given Kane’s age and previous tournament experiences, there have been worries about whether the 32-year-old can maintain peak performance throughout the tournament if his playing time is not carefully managed.

However, Tuchel has firmly dismissed these fitness concerns, stating that Kane is in “top shape” as England prepares for the 2026 World Cup, which will take place across Canada, Mexico, and the USA.

Tuchel Addresses Kane’s Fitness Concerns

During a press conference on Friday, Tuchel emphasized Kane’s importance to the team: “Harry is a key player, there is no doubt. We take care of him but we also want him on the pitch. Ideally, we can take some minutes off him, but if the matches are close do we really do this? Do we take our main goalscorer and captain off? Maybe not.”.

He added, “The most important thing is Harry’s condition. He’s in top shape and ready to go. He was the leading player who set the intensity in training today, even on a defensive training day. He’s accustomed to high pressing and intensity from his time at Bayern Munich.”.

Tuchel expressed confidence in Kane despite potential challenges: “We don’t have to worry about him at all, even if it’s hot and humid. He has shown this week that he is ready and determined; he was highly influential during Bayern’s campaign and scored three goals in the cup final. While we have good options like Ollie Watkins and Ivan Toney, Harry remains our main man upfront.”.

Tuchel Expresses Concern Over Match Pitch

The Three Lions are set to meet New Zealand on Saturday in Tampa Bay before facing Costa Rica in another warm-up match on Wednesday in Orlando.

When asked if his selection for Saturday’s game would be impacted by concerns regarding the newly laid pitch at Raymond James Stadium, Tuchel replied: “I just saw it now. It will not affect my team selection. I saw a photo from a journalist that made me a little concerned, but let’s assess it when we arrive. If there are any issues, we can always react accordingly.”.

England will kick off their 2026 World Cup journey against Croatia on June 17 before taking on Ghana and Panama in their subsequent group fixtures.
