Emad Meteb Discusses Challenges in Egyptian Football and Player Management

Written byFerdous Saeed

Emad Meteb, a former star of Al Ahly and the Egyptian national team, addressed several pressing issues in Egyptian football, including the recent struggles of Al Ahly and various crises the club has faced.

In a televised interview, Meteb attributed the decline in the number of quality strikers in Egypt to evolving playing styles, noting that most teams now rely on a single forward, unlike in previous years when more opportunities were available for strikers.

He praised Palestinian player Wissam Abu Ali, a former Al Ahly player, highlighting his diverse skill set and ability to score in various ways. Meteb emphasized that Al Ahly always needs players of this caliber.

Meteb pointed out that the center-forward position currently poses a challenge for the Egyptian national team due to the declining form of some players. However, he identified Aqtai Abdullah and Hamza Abdel Karim as promising talents in this position.

He reflected on how Egyptian talents once competed strongly on a global scale but noted that reduced exposure and competition have hindered player development in recent years.

Currently, Meteb is focused on enhancing his skills in coaching strikers individually by analyzing their performances and correcting technical errors.

Regarding Al Ahly, he affirmed that the team has some of the best players in Egyptian football but stressed the need to regain their fighting spirit and sense of responsibility, especially since fans are intolerant of losing titles.

On the topic of Ahmed Sayed “Zizo”, he stated that signing him was a logical decision for any management due to his significant technical value, denying any claims that Zizo has caused issues within the locker room.

Meteb also attributed some internal problems at Al Ahly to management’s approach toward contracts and negotiations with players, asserting that financial discrepancies have always existed among top teams.

Concerning Imam Ashour’s situation, Meteb emphasized that the player’s actions were a serious mistake. He noted that maintaining discipline within the team is as crucial as technical aspects while also mentioning that Ashour requires psychological support and special treatment.

He concluded his remarks by stressing the importance of commitment at Al Ahly, recalling his own experience with Manuel Jose, who punished him after one match but later gave him another chance following his full commitment.
