Emad Meteb Reflects on Career Choices and Missed Opportunities
Emad Meteb, former star of Al Ahly and the Egyptian national team, recently shared insights into significant moments in his football career, particularly his final days at Al Ahly and the reasons behind his decision to retire rather than join another club.
Meteb expressed that he believed he was deserving of leading Al Ahly’s attack in 2017, noting his physical and technical readiness to participate fully. He recalled asking then-coach Hossam El Badry for the chance to play three complete matches as a starter to assess his form. However, despite initial agreement from the coach, he did not receive any playing time.
The former forward pointed out that El Badry was convinced there was no role for him in the team at that time, explaining that the coach viewed experienced players sitting on the bench as a sign of their physical unpreparedness for matches.
Meteb emphasized that his decision to retire stemmed from a desire to maintain his strong relationship with Al Ahly’s fans, stating that he saw no benefit in moving to another club other than financial gain. He highlighted that the appreciation and love from supporters were far more valuable than any monetary offers, asserting that their continued affection confirms the wisdom of his choice.
He also revealed details about an unfinished transfer to Bristol City in England back in 2008, explaining that he had completed all necessary arrangements for the move. However, with Al Ahly facing a crucial match against Zamalek in the CAF Champions League and amid challenges following Essam El-Hadary’s departure, he chose to remain and participate in the game, which ultimately hindered his transfer.
Meteb further discussed fellow player Saleh Gomaa, praising his exceptional technical abilities that could have made him one of Egypt’s all-time greats. He noted that despite offering advice over the years, external influences and relationships affected Gomaa’s career trajectory. He asserted that commitment could have led him to greater success with both Al Ahly and the national team.
In conclusion, Meteb expressed hope for Abdullah El-Said’s continued presence at Al Ahly, emphasizing that the player possesses unique qualities difficult to replace. He also commended El-Said’s current contributions with Zamalek, arguing that he remains one of the top players in Egyptian football and demonstrating that age is not a barrier to excellence on the pitch.
