Prime Minister Follows Up on 105 Projects to Strengthen National Electricity Grid

Dr. Mostafa Madbouly, Egypt’s Prime Minister, held a meeting today to review the progress of projects aimed at strengthening the national electricity grid during the second phase. He met with Engineer Mahmoud Asmat, Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy.
The Prime Minister emphasized that this meeting reflects the government’s commitment to monitoring the advancement of projects designed to enhance the national electricity grid. This initiative is part of the state’s ongoing efforts to improve the efficiency of this vital sector and ensure a continuous power supply for residential and developmental uses, alongside expanding electricity production from new and renewable energy sources.
Minister Asmat noted that there are approximately 105 projects in total for strengthening the national electricity grid in this second phase. He provided a detailed update on projects slated for summer 2026, which include a total of 49 initiatives. This encompasses projects that have been tendered, those currently being tendered, as well as contracts that have been signed or are in the contracting process. He also mentioned that regular meetings are being held between the Holding Company for Electricity in Egypt, affiliated distribution companies, and the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company to keep track of developments regarding these projects based on work priorities.
Regarding renewable energy initiatives, Engineer Mahmoud Asmat outlined the status of connecting renewable energy lines, detailing 19 projects aimed at integrating renewable energy into the electricity grid by 2026. These include solar and wind energy projects such as Abydos 2 by Emya Power in Benban, Obelisk 2 by Scatec in Nagaa Hamadi, and Nefert for the Infinity/Hassan Allam consortium in Benban. He also discussed plans for connecting renewable energy projects to the grid through 2027, featuring wind energy initiatives like Aqua Power’s wind farms in Gulf of Suez and Mount Zait, as well as additional projects from Masdar/Infinity consortium.
Furthermore, Asmat addressed plans for integrating independent storage battery projects into the electricity grid for 2027 and 2028. He highlighted ongoing efforts related to renewable energy connections through to 2029 from solar or wind sources, along with expansions at five renewable energy transformer stations.
