Dr. Mustafa Madbouly, Egypt’s Prime Minister, convened a meeting today at the government headquarters in the New Administrative Capital to discuss efforts aimed at revitalizing Islamic and historical landmarks in Cairo. The meeting included Dr. Osama Al-Azhari, Minister of Awqaf; Dr. Ibrahim Saber, Governor of Cairo; and Abdullah Hassan, Assistant Minister of Awqaf for Administrative Affairs.
At the outset of the meeting, Prime Minister Madbouly reiterated the ongoing efforts by relevant state authorities to rejuvenate various historical and heritage sites in Cairo and improve their surrounding areas. This initiative aligns with directives from President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi aimed at preserving the unique architectural, historical, and cultural character of these landmarks while also attracting more tourists eager to explore Cairo’s rich tapestry of historical sites.
Madbouly highlighted that once all restoration works are completed and improvements made around these historic sites, “Cairo’s Heart” will transform into an open tourist attraction that draws visitors from around the globe to enjoy its numerous heritage locations. He emphasized that this would also include a variety of cultural and artistic events planned for venues like “Art Street” in downtown Cairo which recently launched.
During the meeting, the Minister of Awqaf presented updates on restoring several historic mosques and shrines. He affirmed that efforts are ongoing to safeguard Islamic heritage while maintaining Egypt’s civilizational identity. The initiatives extend beyond mere restoration; they aim to create integrated tourist routes linking various historical sites that narrate Egypt’s ancient history through different eras.
Dr. Ibrahim Saber also discussed ongoing projects focused on revitalizing many landmarks from both Khedive-era and Islamic periods, including enhancements intended to restore their historical aesthetics alongside improvements to infrastructure within these historic districts.
In closing remarks, Prime Minister Madbouly underscored the significance of these projects overall. He stressed the necessity for a “Greening Cairo” initiative aimed at converting any vacated space into green areas to increase per capita access to green spaces.
