Zamalek Faces New Setback in African License Amid FIFA Decision

Written byMarwa Hussein

The Zamalek Club has encountered another setback regarding its financial and legal status, following a recent announcement by sports journalist Ahmed Shobair. The decision pertains to former Palestinian striker Omar Farag, coinciding with the club’s efforts to secure its African license ahead of continental competitions.

This development comes at a critical time as Zamalek aims to organize its affairs before the licensing committee reviews club files and submits documentation to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for approval of participating clubs in the upcoming season.

New Fine Related to Omar Farag

Shobair reported that FIFA’s Dispute Resolution Chamber has imposed a fine on Zamalek in favor of Omar Farag. The penalty amounts to $1.761 million, plus an annual interest rate of 5%, with the option for Zamalek to appeal the decision before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

Zamalek’s Local License Status

Shobair reassured Zamalek fans regarding their local license, stating that the club does not face significant issues in this area. He clarified that local licensing is not directly tied to player registration bans but is related to outstanding debts owed by the club, which are estimated at around 30 million Egyptian pounds.

Licensing Committee Review Scheduled

The licensing committee, chaired by Counselor Mahmoud Abedin, is set to convene within two weeks to review club files. The committee will reach out to any clubs that have not fulfilled necessary requirements before June 30th, preparing for submission of documents to CAF.

CAF’s Stance on Suspended Clubs

Shobair noted that the Egyptian Football Association will send files to CAF for obtaining the African license. However, he highlighted that CAF does not easily grant licenses to clubs facing registration bans unless under specific circumstances and stringent regulations.

Divergence on Zamalek’s Licensing Prospects

Opinions vary regarding Zamalek’s ability to secure its African license. Some believe that the club will not encounter obstacles preventing participation, while others argue that CAF will be strict when reviewing documentation due to existing disciplinary sanctions affecting player registrations over two transfer periods.

Registration Ban Pressures Zamalek

Zamalek has been subjected to a disciplinary sanction prohibiting player registrations for two consecutive transfer windows due to accumulated cases involving unpaid dues owed to players and coaches. This ban impacts not only new signings but also intensifies pressure on the club’s management concerning its African licensing process, which requires resolving several obligations before deadlines.

Critical Days Ahead for Zamalek Management

Zamalek needs swift action in the coming days either by settling financial disputes or preparing documentation for licensing. The final decision from CAF will significantly influence how next season unfolds for Zamalek as they aspire towards participation in the Africa Champions League despite ongoing challenges.
