Expert Warns Zamalek: African License Does Not Guarantee Participation Amidst $8.5 Million Debt
Amir Al-Amayra, a sports regulations expert, has cautioned that obtaining an African club license does not necessarily guarantee participation in continental tournaments. He emphasized that ongoing disputes or unpaid financial obligations could lead to exclusion even after securing the license.
In statements made on the program “Number One,” hosted by journalist Mohamed Shabana and aired on CBC, Al-Amayra cited the example of Kenyan club Gor Mahia, which was disqualified from the CAF Champions League just a week before the draw due to pending legal issues and failure to obtain the required license. He noted that no other Kenyan team was included as a replacement since the disqualification decision was made shortly before the draw.
Al-Amayra warned that if Zamalek secures its African license, it could still face exclusion from the tournament if a creditor files a new complaint against them. He stressed the urgency for the club to resolve its financial obligations promptly.
The expert revealed that Zamalek is currently required to pay approximately $8.5 million in various debts and obligations. Additionally, there is another looming fine related to Swedish club AIK concerning the Omar Farag deal, estimated at around $1 million.
Al-Amayra concluded by reiterating the importance of settling outstanding financial matters to avoid any sanctions or decisions that could jeopardize Zamalek’s participation in continental competitions next season.
