Iran Football Federation Accuses FIFA of Failing Promises Ahead of Belgium Clash

Written byFerdous Saeed

The Iranian Football Federation has expressed its dissatisfaction with FIFA, claiming that the national team did not receive any special arrangements regarding travel and accommodation ahead of their upcoming match against Belgium in the group stage of the 2026 World Cup.

In an official statement reported by Tasnim News Agency, the federation noted that the team departed from its training camp in Tijuana, Mexico, heading to Los Angeles, USA, less than 24 hours before the match. This timing has raised concerns among Iranian officials about the limited preparation time available.

The statement highlighted that FIFA President Gianni Infantino had met with Iranian players after their previous game against New Zealand, emphasizing his commitment to providing a fair competitive environment for all participating teams and ensuring equal opportunities.

Despite these assurances, the Iranian federation indicated that expectations within the delegation regarding improved travel and match preparations were not met. No practical steps were taken by FIFA, and U.S. authorities did not grant the team an early arrival to the match city.

In contrast, it was noted that the Belgian team arrived in Los Angeles on Friday and conducted their main training session the following afternoon, benefiting from a longer preparation period before their anticipated encounter.

The Iranian national team faces a crucial match against Belgium on Sunday evening in the second round of group stage play. Both teams are eager to secure their first victory in the tournament.

The group remains tightly contested after all opening matches ended in draws, with Egypt, Belgium, Iran, and New Zealand each holding one point. This intensifies the significance of results in the second round for advancing to the knockout stages.
