Written byFerdous Saeed

Georgios Donis, the head coach of the Saudi national football team, expressed confidence ahead of their World Cup 2026 match against Spain, stating that the encounter does not put pressure on his players. He noted that real pressure may arise in the subsequent match against Cape Verde.

During a press conference regarding the upcoming game, Donis emphasized that the Saudi team would approach the match against Spain with a positive mindset and great confidence. He stressed the importance of respecting their opponent’s strength without succumbing to fear that could hinder their performance on the field.

The coach reflected on their previous match against Uruguay, expressing satisfaction with his team’s first-half performance but acknowledging a decline in level during the second half.

Donis revealed that recent training sessions have focused on enhancing defensive organization and playing with a lower defensive block in preparation for a team like Spain, known for its possession and quick movements.

Addressing criticisms directed at player Salem Al-Dawsari, Donis stated that criticism is a natural part of football, especially for experienced and high-profile players. He underscored the importance of maintaining team spirit and supporting all players during challenging times.

The coach also expressed admiration for young Spanish star Lamine Yamal, describing him as one of the brightest talents in world football today. He noted Yamal’s exceptional technical and mental maturity at such a young age, highlighting his impressive steps in filling the void left by Lionel Messi at Barcelona.

Regarding Saudi Arabia’s historic victory over Argentina in a previous World Cup edition, Donis acknowledged it as a positive memory but clarified that it does not influence their current preparation. He stated that their full focus is on facing one of the world’s strongest teams.

On the psychological aspect, Donis revealed that there is a sports psychologist within the coaching staff. He emphasized that psychological support has become an essential element in modern football, playing a significant role in boosting players’ confidence and mental readiness before major matches.
