Algeria Files Official Complaint to FIFA Over Referee Decisions in World Cup Match Against Argentina

Written byFerdous Saeed

The Algerian Football Federation has officially lodged a complaint with FIFA regarding certain referee decisions made during the match between Algeria and Argentina in the 2026 World Cup, according to reports from Algerian media.

Algeria began its World Cup campaign with a 3-0 defeat to Argentina, a match in which star player Lionel Messi shone, scoring all three goals for his team.

The officiating during the match has sparked controversy within the Algerian camp, particularly concerning incidents that officials believe significantly influenced the outcome.

According to the Algerian newspaper ‘Compétition’, the federation has formally objected to several calls made by Polish referee Szymon Marciniak during the game.

The report highlights two key incidents that Algeria feels warranted greater scrutiny. The first occurred in the 31st minute of the first half when Messi made a strong tackle on defender Aïssa Mandi without receiving any disciplinary action.

Another point of contention arose in the 74th minute, which Algeria believes was a pivotal moment that could have altered the match’s dynamics.

The Algerian Football Federation is now awaiting FIFA’s response regarding their complaint as they continue preparations for upcoming group stage matches, aiming to recover from their opening loss and re-enter the competition for qualification.
