Qatar’s Coach Defends Team After Heavy Loss to Canada in World Cup 2026
Joaquín Lopetegui, the Spanish head coach of Qatar’s national football team, addressed the team’s catastrophic defeat against Canada during the 2026 World Cup.
Qatar suffered a historic 6-0 loss to Canada in a match held on Thursday at BC Place Stadium, marking their second game in the tournament.
In his post-match remarks, Lopetegui stated, “We played against a strong team and conceded an early goal, followed by a second goal which changed the course of the match.”.
He continued, “I believe that the first red card was a key turning point in the game. Before that, we had several chances to reach their goal. The entire team struggled after going down to ten men, as playing with one less player can completely alter a football match.”.
Lopetegui expressed his disagreement with the red card decision, saying, “In my opinion, it was not warranted; it was not a clear goal-scoring opportunity. However, such things happen sometimes. Now, all I think about is preparing our players physically and mentally for the next match.”.
He concluded by emphasizing his team’s determination: “There is a significant difference between the two teams, and this match was tougher than our previous one. However, we are not here because someone granted us this position; we are here because we earned it. We will play and fight until the end.”.
