Julen Lopetegui, the head coach of Qatar’s national team, has stated that his squad has fully moved on from their match against Switzerland and is now focused on their upcoming game against Canada in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

In a surprising turn during their opening match, Qatar secured a 1-1 draw against Switzerland, marking the first point in their World Cup history.

This performance comes as a welcome change for the Qatari team, which had a disappointing showing in the 2022 tournament hosted on home soil, where they exited in the group stage after suffering three consecutive losses.

Before the highly anticipated match, Lopetegui remarked, “We don’t feel pressure; when you pursue your dream, you are not under pressure. We have great ambitions because we have achieved something that has never happened in Qatar’s history.”.

He added, “We are not dwelling on our performance against Switzerland; that is now behind us. Instead, we are concentrating on facing a strong team. Matches like this require mental and physical preparation from the very first minute.”.

Lopetegui continued, “We respect Canada, but our focus is on ourselves and how to implement our style of play. Small details can decide these matches, so we must remain calm and effective at crucial moments.”.

In other news from the tournament, Ghana secured a dramatic victory over Panama, intensifying the competition within England’s group.
