Darwin Nunez Linked with Liverpool Return After World Cup
Darwin Nunez is reportedly on the verge of a surprising return to Liverpool, just a year after his departure from Anfield to join Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal.
According to Uruguayan journalist Juan Pablo Romero, Nunez has already reached an agreement for a move back to Merseyside, with an official announcement anticipated following the conclusion of the World Cup.
The 26-year-old striker transferred to Al-Hilal last summer for £46 million and has since made 24 appearances across all competitions, netting nine goals and providing five assists.
However, Nunez’s situation at Al-Hilal has changed due to restrictions on foreign players in the Saudi Pro League, which left him surplus to requirements after the club’s signing of Karim Benzema.

Romero indicated on the program Minuto 1 that discussions regarding Nunez’s return to Liverpool are already underway behind the scenes. He noted that any formal announcement would be postponed until after the World Cup as the Uruguayan international aims to avoid distractions during the tournament.
This speculation has generated excitement among Liverpool fans; however, it has also faced skepticism. Renowned football journalist Fabrizio Romano addressed these claims on YouTube, stating that sources close to Nunez have dismissed them as “not true,” emphasizing that there is currently “nothing ongoing” between the player and his former club.
Nunez has also been rumored to be considering moves to River Plate and Fenerbahce in recent weeks, making an exit from Al-Hilal appear increasingly plausible.
Liverpool’s Need for Attacking Options

The need for attacking depth at Liverpool has intensified following Hugo Ekitike’s serious Achilles injury, which is expected to keep him sidelined for the early months of the upcoming season.
While Alexander Isak is poised to lead the attack, concerns over his injury history may prompt Liverpool to explore additional options in their forward line. Cody Gakpo and Federico Chiesa are both capable of playing central roles; however, their long-term futures at Anfield remain uncertain.
Nunez previously scored 40 goals in 143 appearances for Liverpool. Nonetheless, unless a deal can be negotiated on favorable terms, a return to Anfield seems unlikely despite growing speculation.
