Written byFerdous Saeed

Marcelo Bielsa, head coach of the Uruguay national team, expressed confidence in his squad’s readiness to face Saudi Arabia in their opening match of the 2026 World Cup, emphasizing that the Green Falcons will not be an easy opponent as some may believe.

Uruguay kicks off its World Cup campaign against Saudi Arabia early Tuesday as part of the first round of group matches.

During a pre-match press conference, Bielsa addressed the delays experienced by Uruguay’s delegation upon arriving in the United States, asserting that this setback did not negatively impact the team’s preparations.

The Argentine coach stated, “The delay in our flight did not cause us any problems; our real preparations began when we were in Uruguay, and we have been working according to a set program for some time now.”.

Bielsa noted that some players did not receive adequate rest following their participation in last summer’s FIFA Club World Cup, which necessitated careful management of their physical loads.

Regarding water breaks during matches, Bielsa expressed his respect for the decision, stating: “The reasons behind implementing this rule are clear, and I see no need to add my personal opinion on it.”.

The coach also provided updates on the physical condition of certain players, confirming that defender José María Giménez has recovered from an ankle injury sustained prior to joining the training camp.

Additionally, he mentioned that Ronald Araújo arrived at the camp with a minor muscular issue, noting that the medical staff is coordinating closely with both the player and his personal medical team to manage his condition.

Bielsa Praises Saudi National Team

Bielsa conveyed his deep respect for the Saudi national team, highlighting its talented players and potential for strong performances.

He concluded: “Saudi Arabia has very good players, and I do not believe we will face an easy opponent. Such judgments should not be made before matches; they are determined on the field.”.
