Ronald Koeman, head coach of the Netherlands national team, expressed his frustration following his team’s 2-2 draw against Japan in the opening match of Group F at the 2026 World Cup early Monday.

The Dutch team took the lead twice during the match, only for Japan to equalize in the 88th minute, denying the “Oranje” a victory in their tournament opener.

In post-match comments, Koeman said, “At the end of the match, I felt a greater sense of frustration. To take the lead twice and then draw is disappointing, but ultimately I accept the result with calmness and sportsmanship.”.

The Dutch coach further remarked, as reported by international media: “Japan is an excellent team capable of winning big matches, but we were better during many phases of the game. I even felt they were intimidated by us at times.”.

Koeman added, “You cannot control every detail of a match. I wanted to win because it brings more calmness to the team, but we must accept the result and move forward.”.

He concluded by saying, “Everything is fine; we can continue. Now we need to make up for it against Sweden in our next match.”.

Group F features teams from the Netherlands, Japan, Tunisia, and Sweden, promising a competitive race for qualification to the next round after a closely contested start among most teams.
